Authors Who Succeed in The Book Business

Throughout my decades in publishing, I’ve written many different types of nonfiction books: biographies, how-to, diet, self-help, co-authored books, children’s books and others. I’ve interviewed more than 150 bestselling authors and written their stories for various magazines. It’s not that I’m the best writer in the room but I am one of the more consistent, persistent writers.

 I attend conferences and pitch my ideas to editors. I listen to their response and sometimes they say, “That’s a good idea, Terry. Write that up and send it to me.” I make a little note, then I go home. write and send it. Now that doesn’t mean I get published, but I did give myself a chance to get published because of my submission.

 Now I go to conferences as an editor and listen to writers pitch their ideas.

I listen carefully and if I hear a good idea, I encourage them to send it to me. I’ve been to conferences across the United States and Canada listening to writers and encouraging them to send me their material. Here’s a startling statistic: probably only about 10% of those writers actually submit their requested material. I follow up through email and often a phone call to encourage them to send it—but they don’t submit.

 There are several other key factors from my experience:

Professionals continue to work at learning the craft of writing. I’m constantly reading books and taking online courses and learning. The authors who disappear off the bestseller list figure they have arrived at their craft and don’t have anything else to learn. Yes, I’ve met some of these writers.

 Professional writers keep in touch with readers through an email newsletter and have invested the time to learn about their audience (readers) then write what they want and expect. These professionals also understand the importance of a gentle follow-up. Notice the word “gentle” because if you are too pushy, the easiest answer to give is “no thank you.” Yes often takes patience, persistence and time.

These professional writers also understand the importance of continual pitching to decision makers (editors but also radio show hosts, podcast creators, and others of influence). Authors who succeed in the publishing world are looking for opportunities. When they find the open door, they have the boldness to move forward and seize it.

 Also professional writers understand the importance of deadlines and meet those deadlines with quality writing. As an editor, I’ve fielded calls from writers who are not going to make their deadlines. They have many reasons—some of them even reasonable. Writers are notoriously late so publishers often build some room for such excuses into their schedule—but don’t be one of those writers. I’ve taken some crazy deadlines from publishers and sometimes stayed writing at my keyboard all night to send my manuscript on the deadline. It’s another key for those writers who succeed in the book business.

The path is not easy for any of us and takes persistence, consistency and discipline.

But it is possible for you to find the right idea and the right book and the right publisher at the right time. I understand there are many rights which need to align. It simply will not fly if you don’t try.

Are You “Almost” an Author?

Do you identify yourself as an author? A writer?

If not, it’s time to start.

You are a writer if…

Do you write poems? Blog posts? Funny anecdotes for the church newsletter?  

Do you journal on a regular basis?

Do you assemble words into sentences and paragraphs for no other reason than because you enjoy doing it?

Do you have ideas and truths you attempt to communicate to others through some written medium?

If you answered yes to any of those questions then you are a writer. A writer is someone who writes. Simple as that.

You are an author if…

Have you written a book, article, or report? If so, then according to the dictionary you are an author.

Don’t believe me? Then consider this.

I was talking about Almost an Author with a faculty member at a writing conference. With a smile, she asked me if I considered myself only almost an author. Then she made an interesting comment about how we use the word author.

She said that published author is a commonly used term but no one ever says unpublished author. This implies that the word author does not necessarily mean a person has been published.

In other words, if you have completed a piece of writing, you are an author. Not almost an author. Not an aspiring author. Not an author imposter.

A real, honest-to-goodness author.

Do you feel like an imposter?

I know how you feel. I struggled for years with the idea that I wasn’t good enough or successful enough to call myself a writer. But one day a wiser and more experienced writer challenged me to have the courage to begin calling myself a writer.

So I did.

And you know what? Not one person accused me of being an imposter. (I did get a few odd looks, but that’s to be expected.)

More recently I went through the same struggle over calling myself an author. I have completed multiple novel manuscripts. I have been published in magazines. I have seen my scripts performed on the stage. And yet I was loathe to call myself an author.

No more!

Three steps to claiming the title of writer (or author)

  1. Internal. The first step is to begin thinking of yourself as a writer (or author). Claiming the title in your own head boosts your confidence and helps you take writing seriously. Until you are willing to think of yourself as a writer you will remain a dabbler—someone who has an excuse to quit at any time. Writers are intentional about writing. Writers mean business.
  2. Among friends. The second step is to call yourself a writer (or author) among your fellow writers. Claiming the title in public can be scary, so start with those who will understand and support you. Other writers understand what it means to call yourself a writer. They understand how long and difficult it is to get published. They will not ridicule you for calling yourself a writer. (If they do, it’s time to find different writer friends.)  
  3. In public. The final step is introducing yourself as a writer (or author) in public. Claiming the title of writer produces instant accountability. It implies you are actively writing. (So long as you are, you can claim the title with pride.) When you get to this step, be prepared to answer questions such as, “What do you write?” and “when will your novel be published?” You may also face skepticism or ridicule. Do not let this stop you from owning the title.

Write Like a Dinosaur to Succeed in Children’s Publishing

Write Like a Dinosaur

While doing research for my latest children’s devotional book, “Dinosaur Devotions: 75 Dino Discoveries, Bible Truths, Fun Facts, and More!” (Tommy Nelson), I realized that children’s writers can learn a lot from our dinosaur friends, so here are a few of my “Dino Do’s” for my fellow children’s writers.

Do be like a Compsognathus (comp-sog-NAYTH-us)—This little dinosaur, about the size of a chicken, didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Though he chased after and munched on small prey, he sometimes watched and waited and let the more powerful predators kill unsuspecting dinos, and then the Compsognathus would sneak in and snack on the dead animals. It’s not that this dino was lazy; it was just smart.

What does this mean to you?

  • Find a mentor text. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Learn from those who have already written an amazing book on the topic (in the genre) that you are desiring to write.
  • Be inspired by those who’ve gone before you. Don’t copy but imitate greatness.

Do be like a Corythosaurus (ko-RITH-o-SORE-us)—The Corythosaurus had exceptional eyesight and hearing.

And you’ll have to as well if you’re going to keep children entertained, engaged, and reading.

  • Listen to how children talk.
  • Watch how they move and interact with the world around them.
  • Make sure you use all of your senses when sharing your stories.

Do be an Amargasaurus (ah-MARG-uh-SORE-us)—The Amargasaurs lived in a dry, hot environment, and scientists believe it might have used its sails to cool off when it became overheated.

When you see books in the marketplace that don’t reflect your values and that makes you angry, cool off like the Amargasaurus and…write something just as cute that showcases your beliefs.

Do be like a Edmontonia (ED-mon-TONE-ee-ah)—This dinosaur was a bulky, armored, tank-like dinosaur. It was covered in bony plates, and along its sides were large spikes. You might say he was heavily armored and protected.

The Edmontonia had very thick skin. You’ll have to guard your heart and feelings if you are in this publishing world very long.

  • Rejection letters pave the road to publication.
  • Remember why you’re writing. Remember that if God called you, He will equip you. And, remember that a bad review isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, controversy often brings publicity which almost always increases sales.

 

Do be like a Utahraptor (Yoo-tah-RAP-tor)—Not much was known about the Utahraptor because so few bones of the large raptor had ever been found. But, that all changed in 2014 when the bones of six Utahraptors were found together on a mountain in the State of Utah. Finding so many Utahraptor skeletons together made experts believe these dinosaurs stayed together and probably hunted in packs.

Like the Utahraptors needed each other to survive and thrive, so do we.

  • Join a critique group—but not just any critique group. If you mostly write picture books, then join a critique group with other picture book writers because someone who specializes in YA probably won’t provide as much helpful feedback.
  • Network with anyone and everyone you encounter because you never know who might be a source for your next story or a future publishing contact.
  • Connect with other children’s writers on social media and exchange ideas. Share each other’s blogs. Promote each other’s work. Celebrate each other’s awards. Engage with your online communities and grow that platform together.

Do be like a Shantungosaurus (shan-TUNG-oh-SORE-us)—While it seemed physically impossible due to this dino’s size, the Shantungosaurus was able to stand on its back legs and actually run.

How does this apply to you? You’ll have to do what might seem like “the impossible” to get published in the children’s market, but you can do it!

  • Just don’t give up.
  • Create habits that breed success.
  • Hang out with people who are better than you.
  • Attend writers conferences.
  • Take online classes and keep learning the craft.

​So, be like a dinosaur and grow your writing career as big as a Patagotitan.

DiAnn, your books have sold over two and a half million copies, but you are extremely approachable and still you strive to assist aspiring writers. What drives you to stay so connected to the writing community?

Three reasons! I was once an aspiring writer (still am), and I haven’t forgotten the efforts published writers put into my career. The second reason is my faith means reaching out to others in love. I want writers to succeed. The third reason is rather selfish because I receive a lot of self-satisfaction in giving my best to writers.

Can you share a little about your recent book – High Treason

High Treason will be released February 2018 and is available for preorder.

When Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal visits Houston to seek cancer treatment for his mother, an attempt on his life puts all agencies on high alert. FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson is the lead on the prince’s protective detail because of their long-standing friendship, but he’s surprised―and none too happy―when the CIA brings one of their operatives, Monica Alden, in on the task force after the assassination attempt.

Kord and Monica must quickly put aside interagency squabbles, however, when they learn the prince has additional motives for his visit―plans to promote stronger ties with the US and encourage economic growth and westernization in his own country. Plans that could easily incite a number of suspects both in the US and in countries hostile to Saudi Arabia. Worse yet, the would-be assassin always seems to be one step ahead of them, implicating someone close to the prince―or the investigation. But who would be willing to commit high treason, and can Kord and Monica stop them in time?

Why do you write? Do you have a theme, message, or goal for your books?

I cannot not write. I have a passion for story that will not let me go. My writing is a ministry, a calling. Yes, my primary focus is to entertain readers, but with that goal is also a need to inspire readers to become better people and encourage them in their life’s journey. When readers can identify with a character who struggles with a problem but does not give up, they are entertained, inspired, and encouraged.

I create suspense novels with a thread of romance. We live in a dangerous world where too often evil dominates over good. My themes are to always show that God will overcome the bad – and triumph.

How long have you been writing?

And how long did it take you to get your first major book contract? Since 1996 when my husband challenged me to write a book. My first book was released in 1998, and it took about six months for the publishing house to purchase it.

How long does it take you to write a book?

3 – 4 months

What’s your writing work schedule like?

Crazy! I’m up early! First I have my marching orders with God. Then I check and post social media. Exercise. Breakfast. Shower. Now to write on my project until noon. After lunch, I continue with my own writing, pen blogs, and read/edit my mentoring students.

Do you have an interesting writing quirk? If so, what is it?

Good question . . . Most of what I do is quirky . . . eccentric . . . at times bizarre. I want boots on the ground regarding my setting – which has been challenging.

What has been your greatest joy(s) in your writing career?

Two: Receiving the author copies of my first book, and winning my first Christy Award in 2010.

What has been your darkest moment(s)?

When I chose to write suspense instead of romance and waited three months for a contract.

Which of your books is your favorite?

That’s like asking which member of my family is my favorite. It’s always the one I’ve just written or the current story.

Who is your favorite author to read?

David Baldacci.

What advice can you give aspiring writers that you wished you had gotten, or that you wished you would have listened too?

A novelist’s job is not easy, neither does a writer want it to be. Be prepared to grow and change each time you write, and never stop learning.

What is the single greatest tool you believe a writer should have in his or her toolbox?

Passion for story.

  I’d like to conclude this question with two quotes.

Ray Bradbury – Love. Fall in love and stay in love. Write only what you love, and love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the morning and write something you love, something to live for.

Winston Churchill – Never, never, never give up.

How many times in your career have you experienced rejection?

A lot!

How did they shape you?

Helped me to see my self-worth is not tied up in performance but in how much my God loves me.

Do you have a favorite character or scene in one of your books?

Another tough one to answer. I like the scene in Double Cross where Laurel learns about Abby’s game room. It’s not what the average person thinks . . .

Where do you get your ideas?

Everywhere – from media headlines to conversations to dreams.

What are common mistakes you see aspiring writer’s make?

Giving up. Telling instead of showing. Incomplete edits.

Where/How do you recommend writers try to break into the market?

Read the how-to books and attend writer conferences. Re-read those how-to books and attend more writer conferences. Re-write. Learn the value of social media and get involved with the community. Commit time to read the bestsellers and figure out why and how it’s a bestseller. Discover the habits of published writers and incorporate them into your world.

Read every day.

Pray every day.
