Avoiding Burnout: Interview with YA Author Gillian Bronte Adams

Burnout. It’s a consequence of producing books that authors don’t always consider. Today’s authors must juggle multiple roles, and often, multiple projects. What’s the best way to approach long-range planning to avoid becoming a casualty of burnout? Today I’m talking with YA author Gillian Bronte Adams.

DJS: You have several books out. What are your best tips for new (and experienced) authors about long-range planning?

GBA: Learn your writing habits and creative style. Are you driven by deadlines or does the pressure  drain you and leave you struggling to write? How good are you at multi-tasking—juggling drafting, marketing, edits, etc.? Which parts of the writing process excite and energize you and which feel like pulling teeth? Do you consistently overwrite or underwrite your first drafts? Would you consider yourself a fast or slow writer?

The more you learn about your personal writing habits and can identify your strengths, weaknesses, and creative personality, the better equipped you’ll be to evaluate each opportunity that comes your way, whether it’s a book contract, deadline, speaking engagement, or event. Trying to take on everything all at once or making decisions based on what others authors are doing (without taking your personal creative process into account) is one of the fastest paths I know to burning out.


DJS: How can writers avoid burnout?

GBA: I struggled with severe burnout while writing the second book in my current series. It was so disorienting to me, because it was a part of a series I’d been dreaming about writing for years and desperately loved, so I know the pain of burning out and the struggle of wondering if your creativity will ever come back. I think it’s vitally important to build rest times into your writing schedule. Writing is a marathon not a sprint. It requires serious discipline, but it’s also fueled by space to think and gain inspiration.

If you wait until you’re continually running on empty, you’ll often need significantly longer to refuel than if you intentionally pause to fill up along the way. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is take a break.

One of the hardest things I’m still learning to evaluate is when my struggle with writing is just because writing is hard and I’m discouraged but can keep going—or when there’s something more severe (like burnout) setting in. That’s where learning to identify your personal writing habits and style helps so much, because you can get a feel for what’s a normal part of your process and what’s not and may be able to catch your own early warning signs of burnout.

I think it’s also important to be aware that burnout can be caused or exacerbated by elements in your life outside of writing. When that’s the case, simply stepping away from writing for a few days might not be enough. Being able to show yourself grace in that situation and, whenever possible, give space for your creativity to recover has to become a priority.

DJS: What are some of the challenges you faced as a multi-published author?

GBA: One of the biggest challenges I was unprepared for after signing my first series contract was how much multi-tasking would be required to draft the next book while editing the first book and promoting my debut launch. It was a crash course in learning to write and create on a deadline while shifting priorities as necessary, and I learned several lessons the hard way.

DJS: When writing gets hard, what do you do to encourage yourself or to recapture your enjoyment of writing?

GBA: Sometimes, I’ll read back over a favorite passage from a previous work, one that captures the heart of the project and helps me remember that we can get there eventually, even if it’s hard. I’ve also started making a list when I begin a new project with all of the things that excite me about the idea—specific scenes, moments between characters, elements of the world that ignite my imagination, etc. Reviewing that list when I’m discouraged reminds why I fell in love with the idea and can help me refocus on what’s really important.


DJS:
If you could go back in time to the moment before you had your first book published, what advice would you give yourself?

GBA: Writing, marketing, and publishing require non-stop decision making. It can feel like each decision is the most important one, especially when you’re about to launch your debut. The decision fatigue can feel paralyzing and hinder you from making even simple choices. So learning to identify which decisions truly are important and deserve significant deliberation and which decisions are not going to be career altering and can be made “for now” is really helpful. I wish I’d known to approach it more like starting off on a journey as an author, as opposed to viewing becoming an author with that first book as my destination.

DJS: What great advice! Thank you for sharing your experiences and the wisdom you’ve gleaned along the way.

Do you have any upcoming projects you want to tell us about?

GBA: I am currently writing the final book in my YA epic fantasy series, The Fireborn Epic. It’s my ode to my favorite thick tomes like The Lord of the Rings and The Stormlight  Archive along with the many years I spent running the horsemanship program at a summer camp, so it has warriors who bond with magical warhorses, cinematic action sequences, and soul striking character arcs. The first two books are out now. I’ve been blown away by the love for this series and can’t wait for readers to be able to dive into the epic conclusion.

How To Overcome Creative Burnout as a Freelance Writer

While the life of a writer may seem easy to the outsider, in reality, it is not for the faint of heart. It takes hours of dedication and a big imagination in order to develop new characters, create a pleasing format, and come up with the hundreds to thousands of words that you need to complete an assignment or turn in a draft. Sometimes, the effort necessary to succeed can get the best of us, and we may encounter writer’s block or burnout.

If you are a writer who has ever struggled to stay awake long enough to write a draft, or you wake up dreading the idea of turning on your computer to fill your word quota for the day, then you may be experiencing burnout. Let’s talk about this phenomenon and what you can do to get your mojo back.

What Is Burnout?

While it may not technically be an official medical condition, for a writer, burnout can be very real. It is often defined by feelings of chronic stress, trouble sleeping, endless anxiety, and a general feeling of tiredness or a lack of inspiration that makes it hard to work or be creative. Burnout can also lead to physical ailments, such as headaches, weight fluctuations, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

There can be many reasons why you may experience burnout or a lack of ambition. One of the more common reasons is that you are pushing yourself too hard, and after working long hours every day to complete your tasks, you could become so tired and uninspired that you do not want to continue. If you believe that is the culprit, then set working hours in stone and stick to a strict schedule.

Sometimes, there can be a combination of factors that lead to your creative burnout. You might have writer’s block, and it is causing you to stay up all night fretting about the issue. That sleeplessness can make you feel even more anxious during the day, and it can make your feelings of burnout even worse. It can be an endless cycle, so you need to regain control and get your life and career back on track.

Create A More Productive Workspace

If you are experiencing burnout or extreme writer’s block, then you may need to change your environment and create a more productive workspace.

Start by finding the proper chair and desk combination. Your desk chair should be comfortable while keeping you upright and attentive without allowing you to slouch. Your desk should be at the right height so that the top of your computer monitors are at your eye level to avoid strain and discomfort. Even better, consider a standing desk that will allow you to stay energized and alert so you can get more work done.

Next, you need to create a more inspiring workspace by opening the blinds and putting your desk closer to the window so you can let in the natural light. It is an important step because natural light has been found to increase productivity, and you’ll also save money on the monthly utilities.

Along with natural light, you should fill the space with plants. It is said that being surrounded by plants can create a more calming and mood-lifting effect. That is because greenery reminds us of being a part of nature, and it may lead to some great inspiration. Make these changes and see if you feel a little bit better about your work.

Find Inspiration Elsewhere

If you find that mixing up your work environment is still not getting you out of your funk, then you may have to find inspiration elsewhere. For instance, if you are not feeling creative with your writing, then consider picking up a new hobby like art or music. That way, you will still be creating something with your imagination, and that newfound energy could transfer over into your writing.

Another idea is to get out of the house and join a critique group. By doing so, you can share your work with other writers and even find a personal critique partner who you can use to bounce ideas off and see if you get out of your writing jam. Consider meeting with several different writers from diverse backgrounds and see if you can get your creative juices flowing again.

If nothing seems to be working, then it may be time to get up and step away for a while. Consider taking time off to enjoy a vacation or a weekend out of the house where you do other activities that you enjoy that have nothing to do with writing.

In the end, if you believe that you are experiencing burnout, then you are not alone. Consider the tips and advice mentioned here, and you will get back into your groove.

The Burnout

Last month I was ready to go on a road trip, shut down my devices, and just vegetate for a few days. I was drained and my creative tanks were empty. The writing life was the farthest thing from my mind and my usual writing responsibilities only frustrated me more.

  • Social media.
  • Writer promotion.
  • Blogging.
  • Screenwriting.
  • Content preparation.

The writing grind had gotten to me and due to the Covid-19 outbreak, a getaway was questionable. Typically this time I escape to the North Georgia Mountains to visit friends or to just be alone in nature. That is how I get my creative tanks refreshed.

Another drawback of the pandemic and remote work is always being at home, because in reality, we are always at work, too. I started working at home as a freelance remote writer a couple of years ago; it has been less stressful on me physically in regards to my disability.

However, since the world has gone on lockdown as a precaution against the virus, remote work has become more popular and the field is flooded with would-be writers all fighting for the same contracts.

This has increased the stress load for those of us already in a tough market that has been severely impacted by the pandemic. The double-edged sword means we have to adjust our pricing to be competitive and seek more work to survive. It’s no wonder many writers are struggling with writing burnout.

Burnout!

Burnout can happen to anyone, regardless of job or health and it is a serious condition. “Burnout is not simply a result of working long hours or juggling too many tasks, though those both play a role. The cynicism, depression, and lethargy that are characteristic of burnout most often occur when a person is not in control of how a job is carried out, at work, or home, or is asked to complete tasks that conflict with their sense of self.”1

Burnout can be disabling in itself. If I am tired, too hungry, dehydrated or stressed out it affects me physically: my speech is slurred, I drag my left leg and at times drool from the left side of my mouth.

These are only a few symptoms and side effects of stress on my brain injuries. Even a healthy person can suffer from the side effects of job burnout:

  1. Have you become cynical or critical at work?
  2. Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started?
  3. Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers or clients?
  4. Are you troubled by unexplained headaches, stomach or bowel problems, or other physical complaints?
  5. Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?
  6. Do you find it hard to concentrate?
  7. Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?
  8. Do you feel disillusioned about your job?
  9. Are you using food, drugs or alcohol to feel better or to simply not feel?
  10. Have your sleep habits changed?
  11. Do you find it hard to concentrate?2

As you can see burnout is both a physical and mental problem that can affect our writing goals. As creatives, we’d like to think we have freedom with our art, but activities like building a platform can be more strenuous than building physical muscles since our success is out of our control.

The American dream and the art of building a platform can push us to the brink of a nervous breakdown. This can impair our creative output. And when our creativity stops flowing, so does our writing. Yet, to be successful we must keep going.

Keep Going!

If you’ve been writing for any amount of time, you understand how difficult it is to keep writing once your creative flow has stopped. This is why we must refresh and recharge our bodies and minds to keep being productive.

Whatever refreshes you or sparks your creativity, do it! Do what you need to do to keep going in your writing career. Below are a few suggestions that might help you to recharge and refocus in your writing:

  • Nurturing your relationships and focusing on hobbies outside of work can help restore your sense of self and mitigate stress.
  • Scheduling regular breaks, starting and stopping at set times, and minimizing multi-tasking can all help maintain boundaries and reduce feelings of burnout.
  • Adjusting your work hours or location (perhaps by telecommuting) can help significantly, as an outsourcing or sharing responsibilities when possible. Setting clear boundaries between “work” and “life”—by not checking email during off-hours, for instance—and allowing for adequate downtime are also useful strategies.
  • Self-care is an effective weapon in the fight against burnout, research shows. Though self-care looks different for everyone, common strategies include yoga, mindfulness meditation, massage, exercise, dietary changes, and practicing self-compassion.3 

As summer comes to an end along with the endless travel, take time to clear your head, rest, and get ready for the upcoming holiday burnout!
