first draft

Recently I began working on another draft of my latest screenplay. I needed to make some changes that were pointed out in a screenplay evaluation I paid for last year. I have been using a particular site to get evaluations on the screenplay for the past year.

The feedback has been invaluable and helps me tell a better story. The evaluators are unbiased experts who can spot weaknesses in screenplays. Good writers are open to feedback on their stories if they want to write the best story possible. Since I’m open to feedback, I’ve improved in a couple of areas.

  • Help find needless typos.
  • Create more compelling characters.
  • Help refine my story’s message.

First drafts aren’t meant to be perfect, they are just the first step in the storytelling process. They will have typos, poor dialogue/characters, and plot holes. These are meant to be fixed in future drafts, right now you’re just concentrating on getting the first draft written.

First Drafts!

No writer tells the perfect story in the first draft, even if they did, there are likely typos or grammatical errors! The purpose of the first draft is to get the story written, which is the beginning of the screenwriting process.

Statistically, the average screenplay goes through 30 rewrites or drafts before the movie goes into production. Even then, there may be script changes. Just like with any other process, screenwriting utilizes trial and error.

With each draft our story should improve, typos corrected and message refined.

If we truly want to write the best story, it is crucial to get professional feedback from other writers. Screenwriters have the option of getting “coverage” from industry experts. The following are a few sites you can go to for paid feedback on your screenplay:

  4. Screencraft
  5. Various screenwriting competitions that provide coverage

For my script, I decided to use the Blacklist to not only get coverage but also share my screenplay online with studios and producers. The feedback I’ve received has been invaluable and it’s forced me to clarify some things, rearrange others, or simply cut parts that do not work.

My story has changed in many ways, but all for the better. And that is the purpose of multiple drafts, to write a better story and help the audience have a better movie-going experience.

Stories Change!

Last year, I explained how screenplays change during the film production process after a studio buys a screenplay. I pointed out how scripts can often be different movies by the time they are released. 

Hollywood is notorious for changing story-lines after purchasing screenplays. Sometimes writers don’t even recognize their work by the time the studio finishes making changes. Below are a few examples of movies that changed before hitting the big screen.

  • Fant4stic Four > Originally this reboot was supposed to be a grotesque horror film.
  • The Avengers > Early drafts had the Wasp as a key character, but she was removed for later films and replaced by Black Widow.
  • Back to the Future > Marty’s father George was supposed to become a championship boxer at the end of the movie.
  • Commando > originally Arnold Scharzeneggar’s character was an Israeli soldier who turned his back on violence. Quite a change.

Stories change, characters change, and evening settings and time periods can change a lot from the first draft! So be ready and open to feedback and change.

You May Be Done, But You’re Not Finished

Little in the writer’s life is as exhilarating as typing the words, “The End.”

If a celebration was ever in order, this would be our moment.

  • We’ve fought through the brain drain aka writer’s block.
  • Stayed at the keyboard till the wee hours of the night.
  • Surrendered free time to the fickle writing muse.
  • Missed parties, events, and time with friends and family.

But now, greatness is found in those two brief words that conclude the saga. The End. The skeptics, the critics, and those who predicted you’d never finish the book will be eating crow.

Bursting with a sudden rush of energy, (along with some well-deserved pride) you share the final product with a friend, your mom, or a writing buddy. You expect the standard oohs and aahs that attend the birth of greatness. Then somebody (clearly someone uninformed) says, “I don’t get the ending.” Or “I didn’t understand why the hero never showed up.”

The feedback is synonymous with calling your baby ugly.

You rationalize their response with the “I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt since they know nothing about writing,” brand of generosity.

Could They Be Right?

An essential component of writing well is the willingness to consider there might be a few valid points in their assessment. Some authors may not dismiss the critique entirely. They shop for additional feedback with an industry professional or pitch it to a publisher at a writer’s conference.

That can be the hard thump.

“It’s a good first draft,” says the pro. “Interesting storyline. I’d suggest you work with a coach or find a good editor to strengthen the plot and help develop your writing style. You have a promising start. Good luck with the second draft.”

If you believed the work was complete, this is a tough moment. A second draft, maybe even a third might be required. Adding more words is not the typical remedy. Killing off your darlings or discarding the overwrought half-page descriptions of the magnolias in full bloom in the moonlit night might be your road to success.

The completion of a first draft is an epic accomplishment. In that finished work is evidence you have what it takes to be a writer – if you are willing to suck up the disappointment and dive in to refine and rewrite your work.

Don’t let the start stop you. You are not starting from scratch. But you do need to take a long look at your book baby with a more critical eye. The rewrite is inevitable as we learn the craft of writing. Every successful writer knows the first draft is seldom – if ever – the final.

Where Should You Start?

  • Consider the advice of the industry professional. If the feedback is general in nature, ask for specific insight for both strengths and opportunities for improvement in the work. For every “no thanks” to my first book – ten rejections – I asked for feedback that helped strengthen the work. I know their input and my willingness to incorporate it has helped me gain contracts for a total of six published to date.
  • Seek assistance from someone who has a successful track record to help move you forward. A certified writing coach or industry professional can help you accelerate your knowledge and build new skills.
  • Take a course – many are available online or through regional writing groups in your area.
  • Purchase and read books on the craft. The patron saint of this column’s book On Writing Well is a classic.
  • Attend a writing conference and select courses specific to your need.

Above all, refuse to throw in the towel (or throw a tantrum) and remember, you may be done, but you’re not finished!

National (What?) Month

As you are reading this, it is December, the last month in the slog that has been 2020. Many of you have just finished Nanowrimo, or National Novel Writing Month (for those of you who have eluded this illustrious event).

Writers around the country commit to writing an ENTIRE NOVEL during the month of November. There’s even a website, an accountability program, and more. Writing can be stressful, especially in these times, but, hey, let’s write a book in an entire month!

November is typically a hectic month for me, which I’ll discuss below, and that’s why I have never participated in Nanowrimo. Until this year. Sort of.

I have written some fiction, but my current focus has been devotional writing. I have been kicking around some ideas for new devotional books, so I decided to work on one of those during November. I guess you could call it “Nadevowrimo.” Has a certain ring to it, don’t you think? Seriously, I don’t think I’ll be starting a new trend any time soon, but it worked for me, for a while.

I figured if I wrote one devotion every day except Sunday (I need rest, y’all!), I’d have a good start on a new book by the end of November. The commitment of writing one piece a day would certainly help my discipline, wouldn’t it?

I am a teacher, and November tends to be “crunch time” as we barrel toward the end of the fall semester. Add virus concerns to that mix, and it has been even more intense, as my administration encouraged teachers to finish as much of our class work as we could by Thanksgiving break.

I am the Operation Christmas Child (OCC) coordinator at my church and one of the county coordinators in my area. At the beginning of November, I supervise the packing of a ton of shoeboxes, and then, the week before Thanksgiving, I oversee a drop-off center, where other churches, groups, and individuals bring their boxes to us. My fellow church members and I are then responsible for collecting them and transporting them to the Regional Drop-Off Center an hour away.

So, I wrote religiously for the first two weeks of November. Then OCC Week hit simultaneously with the new guidelines for wrapping up my semester at school, and what happened to Nadevowrimo? It flew out the window.

You know what? That’s okay.

For two weeks, I was disciplined. For two weeks, I got a lot of writing done. As I write this post, there is a week and a half left in the month, and I plan to “climb back on the horse” next week. Instead of beating myself up about missing some days, I’m celebrating what I did accomplish and looking forward.

Another thing about this experiment: I didn’t particularly like the stuff I wrote. There were times I wanted to close up the laptop, quit writing, and eat a package of cookies. Then I realized: programs like Nanowrimo are all about FIRST DRAFTING, getting the thoughts out of the mind and on the page. For me, it wasn’t about quality or even quantity. It was about roughing out those ideas to give me plenty to work with when I am ready to complete the project.

Now, I still want to eat an entire package of cookies, but only for fuel to give the strength to keep writing.
