My Fifth Anniversary

As an adult, writing has been a mainstay of my professional career. I majored in journalism, interned at newspapers, worked at magazines and television stations, then migrated to marketing and freelance copywriting. For twenty-plus years, I’ve used words to persuade someone to do or buy something.

I enjoyed writing, I felt competent, but something was missing. If it weren’t for the occasional journal entry or poem I drafted here and there, my relationship with writing was transaction-based. I wrote. I revised. I collected a paycheck.

Even though I was always happy and thankful about my ability to write as part of my day job, something was missing. I felt restless and frustrated. I had ideas and characters in my head who wanted to play, but there was no room in my day job for them.

I kept on writing website copy, marketing presentations, or ghostwriting blog posts. One night, after everybody was tucked in and asleep, I started writing a story. Nobody was paying me to write it. There was no deadline attached to it. It was a creation of my own with no other purpose but to enjoy the discipline and freedom of writing.

Now it’s March 2020. Although I haven’t yet sold that first manuscript, I’ve finished a couple of others since then. I know I still have much to learn, but here are a few things I wish I’d known five years ago.

1) Critique groups are crucial. 

In my corporate and freelance world, I “routed” copy to other team members to make sure it was factually accurate and error-free. Even though it was time consuming and occasionally painful, receiving feedback made my writing stronger. For the life of me I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to do that with my first manuscript.

I entered my first writing competition in March 2015 with a rough draft. My first manuscript didn’t get seen by another living soul until I met my first critique group at the SCBWI conference later that year. Until that conference, I’d never heard of critique groups. Now I can’t live without them. Like the “routing” teams in my past 9-5 life, critique groups exist to make the work better. They bring fresh eyes and perspective and catch things I would have otherwise missed.

2) Critique groups are not interested in stealing your work.

Tell a non-writer about your critique group and they’ll probably ask you if you’re afraid someone will steal your idea. Take comfort in this knowledge: Writers in a critique group understand what being a writer is about. They know how hard it is to write. They want to see you succeed – not plagiarize from you.

3) Comparing yourself to other writers is a waste of time and energy.

Over the past five years, I’ve met all kinds of writers. They each have a different story to tell about their path to publication. Some publication stories are dreamy, some are fraught with obstacle after obstacle. Other stories are relatively short and sweet. Nobody else’s publication story will be exactly like yours. Mine is a work in progress, and not only am I okay with that, I’m excited about it. My journey is as unique as I am. Yours will be as unique as you are. There’s room for all of us. Embrace that and don’t worry about what other writers are doing.

Getting Through the Fog by Carlton Hughes

A new year is normally a time of reflection, of goal-setting, of looking forward to possibilities. That’s normally the way it is for me, but this year was different.

Right after New Year’s Day, I was diagnosed with the flu. I haven’t been that sick in years, and my vision-casting, planning, and reflections melted away. I spent several days in bed barely able to think, and then, when I was able to return to work to try to function, my mind remained in a fog. I would do my work and then return home and collapse on the couch. The illness took a lot out of me.

I gradually returned to the land of the living . . . and of writing. Thankfully, I did not have any major deadlines during my down time, but I did have some things on the “back burner.” Two friends had sent invitations to do guest posts on their blogs, with the stipulation that I could take my time in submitting. What a blessing to have friends without deadlines!

One thing I learned through it all is that I have to be patient with myself. I’m certainly not getting any younger, and the bounce-back time for illnesses like the flu is longer than it used to be. I made lists—sometimes in the middle of the night when the thoughts came—and wrote rough, rough (really, really rough) drafts as I could. I even spent time thinking about a new project, and I hopefully I will actually remember those thoughts when I sit down to put something on paper.

I used the down time to truly rest, and, in the end, I think that’s what I needed. It would have been nice to be able to rest without the sneezing, coughing, and aching feelings, but, hey, I took it as it came. So, when life happens, roll with it, rest, and make lists. Those big tasks will be waiting on you when you emerge from the fog.

Carlton Hughes wears many hats—some serious, some goofy.

During weekdays, he sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher (wah-wah wah-wah-wah) as a community college professor of communication and journalism. On Sundays and Wednesdays, you’ll find him playing games, performing songs with motions, and doing object lessons in his role as a children’s pastor. He and his wife also attempt to keep up with their two college-age boys.

In his “spare” time, Carlton is a freelance writer who has been published in numerous books, including several recent releases from Worthy Publishing: The Wonders of Nature, So God Made a Dog, Just Breathe, Let the Earth Rejoice, and the forthcoming Everyday Grace for Men. Tanka: Poetic Forms III

Today we are going to look at another short form of Japanese poetry known as tanka. The short form of this poetry, much like haiku, is great for any level poet, but especially beginners.

Tanka and haiku are technically different forms of poetry, but they are related. Some poets see tanka as an extended haiku because the first three lines take the same form. But others would disagree and maintain that they are two very distinct forms.

One difference concerning tanka is that the last two lines are 7 syllables each, making it a 5-line poem. Therefore it contains the syllabic pattern of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7.

Moreover tanka poems generally focus on a specific object or event to convey a mood or emotion through imagery and figurative language. In other words, the poems cover a broader field of subjects (not only nature) and can include some reflection as well.

The Shadow Poetry website offers a great explanation and examples of tanka.

As I noted before concerning haiku, be aware that tanka originated from Japanese culture so the form may be perceived and written a little differently in English. Obviously, I am explaining the English guidelines for writing these types of poems.

However, if you’re interested, Shadow Poetry covers some of the cultural and language differences. They also offer a host of resources for writing many kinds of poetry.

Now I’ll share my own tanka poem that started out as a haiku.

Purple irises

with proudly tall and green stalks

stand near the water.

Grass carpets the water’s edge.

And I, a lowly clover.

Honestly, I wrote this during a break at a writing conference while sitting by a pond surrounded by beautiful flowers. I was reflecting on how we can be easily discouraged and intimidated when surrounded by superstar writers or poets. So through imagery, personification and metaphor I attempted to convey that sense of inferiority.

Here are some tips to help you craft your own tanka:

*Try writing a haiku first and then adding the last two lines as reflection on your subject

*Use concrete images (relating to the five senses) that allow the reader to experience what you’ve experienced

*Choose vivid verbs and nouns but don’t forget to count syllables!
