Heather also shares popular trends and tropes in the genre, and advice on how building an indie career by writing a cozy mystery series.

Heather Day Gilbert, award-winning novelist, enjoys writing mysteries and Viking historicals. She brings authentic family relationships to the page, and particularly delights in heroines who take a stand to protect those they love. When she’s not plotting stories, this native West Virginian can often be found hanging out with her husband and four children, playing video games, or reading Agatha Christie novels.
The Ins and Outs of Working With an Illustrator
Children’s author Pam Halter and illustrator Kim Sponaugle team up in this episode to share how they collaborate to create beautifully illustrated picture books that tell engaging and imaginative stories. They have a unique working relationship. These two are best friends have worked together on multiple projects both in the traditional publishing and self-publishing worlds.

Pam Halter and Kim Sponaugle published two picture books in their Adventures of Beatrice with Concordia in 2001. Willoughby and Friends, published in 2017, with three Willoughby books and a coloring/activity book. They’ve won both the Purple Dragonfly awards, a Realm Award. While they often work independently, their first love is working together. There’s something magical that happens when their creative minds get together, and it’s not just drinking coffee and eating brownies. They love teaching the craft, especially as a team, and mentoring beginning children’s book authors.
